ARCHIVAL INFORMATION

Archival history:

It is believed that Lee and Pembertons had about 10,000 letter books at their Penton Estate Office but that by 1966 all but some 1900 volumes had been destroyed. At the end of 1982 the Greater London Record Office agreed to take a limited sample of the records the held by the BRA, being of the opinion that this was adequate to reflect the nature of the surviving series which were themselves only a part of the records of the firm. Those records, which appeared all to be volumes of draft bills of costs and copy correspondence, which remained at the House of Lords storage at Kew where the House of Lords Record Office had generously lent space for them, were then destroyed.

Immediate source of acquisition:

Records first deposited by the firm with the British Records Association in 1966; passed to the Greater London Record Office [now LMA] in 1982.
