CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

The original fellowship existed before 1300 and the Guild obtained ordinances in 1463. The Company was granted its charter of incorporation in 1606. The Company role was to inspect fruit being sold in the City and assess duties to be paid on imported fruit.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract:

Records of Worshipful Company of Fruiterers, 1606-2000. The records include registers of freedom admissions; apprentice bindings from 1749; charters; Court minute books; papers of Richard Sherwin Gothard (Master 1982-3), the Company's Hon. Archivist; quarterage books; papers concerning the Company's Ridley Medal, awarded every three years, for outstanding services to fruit culture; financial accounts; letter books and photographs. No membership records are available before 1748.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING ACCESS: These records are stored at the Guildhall Library site rather than the LMA Clerkenwell site. Researchers wishing to access these records should do so at the Guildhall Library Rare Books table. The Library is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 16:45. Researchers will need to have an Archives History Card or a Library Readers Card. An archivist will be available at Guildhall Library on Thursday mornings to answer any queries.

The records were deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library in 1949, 1963 and 2001. The Manuscripts Section merged with London Metropolitan Archives in 2008. The records were catalogued in 1949, 2002 and 2006 by Guildhall Library staff.

A. W. Gould, History of the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers (1912) lists members who appear in City poll books from 1700. This book is available in Guildhall Library Printed Books Section.
