Administrative/Biographical history:

Samuel Gregory (1802-1858) was an attorney and a freeman of the Clothworkers' Company. He is often described as "of the Lord Mayor's Office", but he does not appear to have held an official position with the City of London Corporation.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract:

These records were compiled or annotated by Samuel Gregory in the mid-19th century. They comprise: the "Lord Mayor's autograph book" which contains the original signature of every Lord Mayor from 1657 to the present date; notes and cuttings relating to Lord Mayors, Chamberlains, Recorders and aldermen; history and notes relating to liverymen of the Barber Surgeons Company; drawings of merchants' marks; and miscellaneous manuscript and printed items compiled by Gregory.

Archival history:

Immediate source of acquisition:

Ms 20 was purchased by Guildhall Library in 1859. The source and date of acquisition of Ms 21-22 are unknown; Ms 22 was presumably acquired at the same time as Ms 20. Ms 1103-4, 1107-11 and 1113 were purchased as part of the collection of Joseph Jackson Howard in 1902 (for which see under Joseph Jackson Howard). Ms 1624 was donated in 1911. Ms 3324 was purchased in 1935. Ms 7836 was purchased in 1902. Ms 12012 was received from the Bishopsgate Institute in 1967. They were catalogued at various dates up to 1967 by Guildhall Library staff. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.

Lord Mayors' Autograph Book (MS00020) was formerly part of the antiquarian collection of Samuel Gregory of the Lord Mayor's Court Office, but is now maintained by the City of London Corporation which purchased the volume in 1859.
