Sumatra Petroleum Company was formed under the auspices of the Sumatra branch of Wallace and Company to work the oil resources of the Dutch East Indies. The venture failed and the Company was closed in 1905.

Records of Wallace and Company Bombay including records relating to Bombay and Rangoon branches. Includes letter books, power of attorney and correspondence relating to accounts, shares, staff and petroleum (CLC/B/207/MS40875 - MS40926). Also includes papers relating to the formation of the Sumatra Petroleum Company.

Immediate source of acquisition:
These archives were deposited as part of the archives of Wallace Brothers; deposited in Guildhall Library in 1974-6. The deposits were converted to a gift in 1988. Between 1988 and 1991 additional gifts of material were made to the Library. All were previously stored at the London office of Wallace Brothers, and all but a few of the papers were either created there or received there in the course of business. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
