Scope and content/abstract:

Manuscript volume containing a treatise by Jacques Angrand, Vicompte de Fontpertuis, on French finance, [1740], comprising a treatise on the benefit of public credit, entitled 'L'Utilité du crédit public', demonstrated in four parts. The manuscript includes an allegorical drawing in pen and ink on folio 8.

The manuscript contains the arms of Anne-Robert Jacques Turgot, Baron de L'Aulne (1727-1781), a French economist and statesman, and was probably made especially for him. It is also inscribed 'ex libris [S]. Fourgeaud Lagrèze'.

Immediate source of acquisition:

Part of the Goldsmith's Library of Economic Literature, initially collected by Herbert Somerton Foxwell and presented by the Goldsmith's Company to the University of London in 1903.
