CONTEXT
Administrative/Biographical history:
William Cobbett was born in Farnham, Surrey, in 1863. He enlisted as a soldier, and was also a tutor before turning to political writing. He published pamphlets in both Britain and America, usually under the pan name of Peter Porcupine. He owned farms on both sides of the Atlantic. He espoused a mixture of radical and conservative views and was much concerned with rural distress and the state of English farming. He was briefly MP for Oldham, Lancashire, in the 1830s.
CONTENT
Scope and content/abstract:
Letter from William Cobbett of Normandy Farm [near Ash, Surrey] to an unknown recipient, 12 Sep 1833. 'He [Cobbett's son, also William] will in my name, and with my full authority agree to any modifications as to date of Bills and the like, that you may think right, and indeed, he will be advised by you in all respects.' After a reference to the History of George IV, which 'is worth more than the whole money', he ends the letter, 'But I have resolved upon the step I am taking: it is necessary to my perfect freedom: and I do beseech you to do all you can to bring it to a conclusion as quickly as possible.' The meaning and context of this letter is obscure. Autograph, with signature.
