ARCHIVAL INFORMATION

Accruals:

Archival history:

The papers are largely a result of Hammelmann's work producing numerous articles, and his commission to write a book on eighteenth century book illustration. He continued to work up to his death in the autumn of 1969, and shortly after his correspondence was reunited with the main body of his files in Italy. His papers were donated to the Courtauld Institute in 1971, where some notes and labelling were undertaken. T S R Boase agreed to continue the task of editing his work, and the papers were handed over to him. After Boase's death in 1974 his work was completed by Nicholas Barker and Margaret Cawkwell. The papers were later returned to the Courtauld, along with Boase's own papers, some of which are included in this collection. The collection has been sorted as far as possible to reflect Hammelmann's own system.

Immediate source of acquisition:

Donated to the Courtauld Institute in 1971.
