Administrative/Biographical history:
The files listed below comprise primarily the files of J A Boxhall, Secretary from 1971-1986, when he retired due to ill-health. He was replaced temporarily by H F Patterson. In 1987 a new Administrative Secretary, D E Phillips, was appointed.

Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS) Secretary's policy and general files, 1946-1988, comprising: Secretaries' file on establishment, terms of reference and membership of the Committee of Management, which carried out the administration of the Institute, 1946-1988; J A Boxhall's annotated copies of papers of the Committee of Management, including minutes of its two sub-committees, the General Purposes sub-committee and the Library sub-committee, 1971-1973; agendas, minutes and papers of the Committee of Management, and minutes of the two sub-committees, 1973-1979, 1984-1986; agenda, minutes and papers of the Services sub-committee, 1984-1986; J A Boxhall's correspondence and papers relating to meetings of Institute secretaries, 1977-1982; J A Boxhall's correspondence and papers concerning Court and Senate grants, 1977-1987; J A Boxhall's file relating to the BIICL (British Institute of International and Comparative Law) lease, 1977-1978; J A Boxhall's file relating to meetings of the Government Legal Advisers Course Advisory Board, with annotated agenda, minutes and papers, 1982-1986; J A Boxhall's policy file relating to an IALS fund raising working party, 1985-1986.

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling information:
Appraised and listed by the Archivist in 1999. The original order of many of the files was impossible to reinstate as most file covers had been removed and the files rearranged prior to transfer to the Archives.
