CONTEXT
Administrative/Biographical history:
Advisory appointments committees were set up by regional hospital boards in 1955 to select consultants for appointment in hospitals around the country. Committee members were external assessors who came from a different area to where the appointment was being made. Method of selection of assessors was as follows: requests would be made to the relevant medical college for nominations for membership of committees, and those persons nominated approached directly by the President of the College.

Scope and content/abstract:
Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists records of the Advisory Appointments Committees, 1955-1994, comprising correspondence regarding the functions of advisory appointment committees, such as nomination to the committees, appointment to the regional hospital boards and the criteria for consultant appointments (1962-1967). Also includes: a list of nominations to the committees (1962-1967); a sample of assessors reports on candidates and appointments to consultant posts (1978-1994, 1998-1999); papers relating to censuses conducted by regional college advisers; papers concerning regional advisers' censuses of Senior House Officer (SHO) posts (1982, 1986).

In 1999 a Disposal Agreement (DA/5) was made between the Administration Department and the College Archives to destroy unsuccessful applications.

No further accruals are expected.
Archival history:
Records in this series were transferred to the Archives by the Postgraduate Training Department (PGT), which was responsible for administrative work relating to the advisory appointments committees until 1993 when the Administration Department assumed responsibility. In 2000 PGT resumed responsibility for the committee related work.
