CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

An international liaison committee of professional organisations and national associations of gynaecologists and obstetricians, UPIGO was formed in 1955. Its objectives were:
- to study, represent and defend the ethical, professional and material interests of obstetricians and gynaecologists before all international authorities,
- to study and to explain the ethical, legal, professional and social problems which occur in these disciplines, according to the particular interest they arouse,
- to establish relations with any appropriate national or international organisation,
- to provide exhaustive literature on the profession of gynaecologist-obstetrician to each member or delegation of members, in order to stimulate progress in the policy of each country in the fields of training of practitioners and the safety of women, as well as that of unborn children,
- to promote the harmonisation of qualifications and conditions of practice for specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology, in order to justify professional migration within the framework of international regulations,
- to promote products or services which will satisfy ethical considerations as well as the Association's expectations of quality.

Scope and content/abstract:

Records relating to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists' participation in meetings of the Union Professionnelle Internationale des Gynecologues et Obstetriciens (UPIGO), 1971-1991, including correspondence of the Honorary Officers, papers of Dame Josephine Barnes, agenda and minutes of meetings, accounts and publicity material relating to UPIGO work.

ARCHIVAL INFORMATION

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling information:

In 1999 a Disposal Agreement (DA/5) was made between the Administration Department and the College Archives to destroy unsuccessful applications.

Accruals:

Later correspondence and papers are found within their correct administrative context.

Archival history:

An artificial series of records, apparently removed from the papers of College Presidents, College Secretaries and Honorary Secretaries.

Immediate source of acquisition:

It is probable that C7/1-3 were removed from President's correspondence files. The records at C7/4-5 were transferred to the Archives by the Committee Secretary, Administration Department. The 1993 report on GP vocational training in obstetrics and gynaecology (C7/5) was found amongst President's papers for that year.
