CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

Stanley G Clayton was born on 13 September 1911. He was educated at King's College and King's College Hospital medical School, University of London. From 1947-1963 he was obstetrical and gynaecological surgeon at King's College Hospital, Queen Charlotte's Hospital and the Chelsea Hospital for Women. He was Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of London from 1963-1976, and from 1977 Emeritus Professor. He was editor of the College's Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from 1969-1973, Vice President of the College from 1970-1973 and its President from 1973-1975.

Personal papers of Sir Stanley George Clayton, 1938-1986, including copies of speeches made as President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, personal copies of President's Letters, Clinical and surgical research notes, 1938-1945, case notes, 1962-1979; correspondence and other papers concerning the House of Commons Select Committee on Abortion, 1974-1976; correspondence concerning the Margaret Pyke Centre, London, 1978-1984.

Copyright in records created by Sir Stanley in his official capacity as President is vested in the College. Copyright in the remaining material is vested in Sir Stanley's estate.

The papers were deposited in the College Archives by Lt Col Richard Clayton, along with some papers relating to Sir Stanley's presidency which may be found at A4/15/39-40. An exception is S11/12, which contains a personal letter from Sir Stanley to the College Archivist.
