CONTEXT
Administrative/Biographical history:
John Menzies Campbell was born in Paisley, in 1887. He studied dentistry at St Mungo's College and the Glasgow Dental School. He then became a pupil of J G Angus, LDS. Following his graduation as LDS in 1911, he went to Toronto where he graduated DDS in 1912. He became a dental practitioner in Glasgow, where he practised for 42 years. He developed a great interest in dental history, collecting a unique collection of books, artefacts, pictures and advertisements. He bequeathed his collection of books and historic dental advertisements to the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1964, while he donated the pictures and artefacts to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He died in 1974.

Papers of John Menzies Campbell, 1709-1971, comprising a typescript catalogue of books given to the Royal College of Surgeons of England; an album of press cuttings, 1930-1931; a photograph album; a personal scrap book, 1911-1981; odontological advertisements, 1709-1850; scrap book of historical dental items, 1807-1971; Glasgow directory lists of dentists [missing - May 2008]; Edinburgh directory lists of dentists, 1773-1850 [missing - May 2008]; copy of notes taken at the first known British trial where dental surgeons gave evidence, 1814; and a certifcate awarded to Menzies Campbell on becoming a corresponding member of the Swedish Dentists Society, 1965 [missing - May 2008].

It is believed that the catalogue of donated books, the album of press cuttings, the photograph album, and the personal scrapbook were compiled by John Menzies Campbell. The remainder of the papers were compiled by his wife, Margaret Menzies Campbell.
ALLIED MATERIALS
Existence and location of originals:
The original notes taken at the first known British trial where dental surgeons gave evidence, in 1814, were given to the Royal College of Surgeons of England upon the centenary of the Glasgow Dental Hospital and School in 1979.
The pictures and artefacts donated to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh now form the Menzies Campbell Dental Museum.
