The General Purposes Committee was responsible for matters of general principle and policy, and matters which affected more than one committee, but which were not designated as the responsibility of any one of those committees. It was also responsible for departments which did not have a separate committee.

Scope and content/abstract:

Records of the Middlesex County Council Clerk's Department relating to the General Purposes Committee, 1747-1965. General files on a variety of subjects including inspection of weights and measures, ward divisions, parish boundaries, elections and electoral divisions, finance, the County Architect, licensing, refuse disposal and gravel pits, the registration of births, deaths and marriages, Alexandra Palace, building projects and architectural services, Hogarth House, ceremonies, ancient monuments, exhibitions, town twinning, local valuation panels, purchase of motor vehicles for use by staff, the Public Control department, policy and functions of the Supplies Committee, appointment of coroners, local authority boundaries, airports, health services, gas supply, County Council seal and coat of arms, light railways and tramways, plans of Mogden sewer works and maps of Local Board areas.

Orders made by the County Council; minutes of conferences between Middlesex County Council and local authorities on the General Review of County Districts; minutes of proceedings of local enquiry into county electoral divisions; registers of premises storing explosives, registers of licensed employment agencies, registers of performing animals, registers of theatrical employers and registers of poison sellers.
