Administrative/Biographical history:
The company was granted its charter in 1670 and its livery in 1773. By the late 18th century its control over the trade had ceased, but from 1882 onwards the company has been a firm supporter of general technical education, through grants and classes.

Scope and content/abstract:
Records of the Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights, including charter, 1670 (Ms 5868); ordinances, 1670, 1714 (Ms 5869-70); grant of arms, 1964 (Ms 19596), court minutes, 1766-1967 (Ms 3847), and a declaration book of masters, wardens, assistants and freemen, 1883-1940 (Ms 3848).
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING ACCESS: These records are stored at the Guildhall Library site rather than the LMA Clerkenwell site. Researchers wishing to access these records should do so at the Guildhall Library Rare Books table. The Library is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 16:45. Researchers will need to have an Archives History Card or a Library Readers Card. An archivist will be available at Guildhall Library on Thursday mornings to answer any queries.

The company's archives have been deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library at various dates since the 1950s. The Manuscripts Section merged with London Metropolitan Archives in 2008. They records have been catalogued by various members of staff over many years.
