Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

Francis Wormald was Professor of Palaeography in the University of London from 1949-1960, and Director of the Institute of Historical Research from 1960-1967. The range of documents in this collection reflects the fact that they were used as a palaeography teaching tool, giving examples of types of handwriting.

Collection of documents, mainly property deeds, dating from before 1162 to 1659, and relating to land in England, Wales and Jersey.

Access to this collection is unrestricted for the purpose of private study and personal research within the supervised environment and restrictions of the Library's Palaeography Room. Uncatalogued material may not be seen. Please contact the University Archivist for details.

Conditions governing reproduction:

Copies may be made, subject to the condition of the original. Copying must be undertaken by the Palaeography Room staff, who will need a minimum of 24 hours to process requests.

Finding aids:

'A catalogue of MS.814' (1975) was prepared by Dr. Diana Greenway and her pupils on the Paleography and Diplomatic course. The catalogue contains an index of persons and places.

Provenance unknown, though the documents appear to have been arranged in their present order before 1900.
