Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

Jack Piercy (1899-1986) was a Canadian by birth who had come to Britain after World War One . He was appointed Surgeon-Superintendent at New End Hospital, Hampstead in 1932. He became eminent for his research and pioneering treatment into diseases of the thyroid, establishing New End as a world-renowned centre for endocrinology, especially after the opening of the Endocrinology Department in 1955. He was awarded the CBE on his retirement from New End in 1966.

Scope and content/abstract:

Papers of John E (Jack) Piercy, Surgeon Superintendent at New End Hospital 1932-1965, comprising lecture notes on the history of New End Hospital [1934] and diseases of the thyroid [c1937], correspondence, photographs and papers on the official opening of the Thyroid Clinic and Department of Endocrinology at New End by the Duke of Edinburgh, 1955; photographs and press cuttings on Piercy's retirement as Surgeon-Superintendent of New End, 1965; photopraphs and press cuttings on the opening of Piercy Ward at New End, 1978; photographs of prizegivings at New End School of Nursing, 1950 and undated.

Attempts were made to catalogue the papers shortly after Piercy's death in 1986, and this description therefore reflects the arrangement and, numbering system used at the time.

The papers in this collection are believed to have been donated to the Archives Centre by Jack Piercy's daughter, Mary Piercy Miller, after his death in 1986. Attempts were made to catalogue the papers shortly afterwards, and this description therefore reflects the arrangement and, numbering system used at the time.
