Context
Administrative/Biographical history:
The South-Western Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1891 and from 1895 was known as the South-Western Polytechnic, then from 1922-1956 as Chelsea Polytechnic. South-Western initially aimed to improve the level of technical education available to working class men, and also offered courses in domestic economy for girls wishing to enter domestic service. By 1908-1909 South-Western consisted of a Day College for Men, Day College for Women, School of Art, schools for boys and girls, and evening classes in a range of subjects, including mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and building, chemistry and metallurgy, natural science, languages, commerce, domestic economy, art, music and physical training.

South-Western Polytechnic and Chelsea Polytechnic fees book registers for day classes, 1895-[1928], fees book registers for evening classes, 1897-1915 (Ref: CA/SFB), statistics books, 1907-1938 (Ref: CA/STATS), miscellaneous register, 1897-[1913] (Ref: CA/REG). Information contained in fees books typically includes name, age, occupation, classes, time per week and fees. Statistics books contain information on terms kept, student hours per registration, per subject and class entries per term. The miscellaneous register contains lists of certificates awarded to students, the wording on them and distribution details.

Fees books are organised chronologically, then divided into Day College for Men or Women, then alphabetically. Statistics books are arranged chronologically.
Conditions governing access:
Subject to an eighty year closure period from date of leaving, but may be consulted by appropriate College staff at the discretion of the Director of Archive Services.
Conditions governing reproduction:
Copies, subject to the condition of the original, can be supplied to appropriate College staff. Requests to publish original material should be submitted to the Director of Archive Services, King's College London.
