Administrative/Biographical history:

Katherine Maria Routledge was born 1866; graduated from Somerville Hall, 1895; taught courses through the Extension Division and at Darlington Training College; after the Second Boer War, she traveled to South Africa with a committee to investigate the resettlement of single working women from England to South Africa; Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, 1900-1939; married William Scoresby Routledge, 1906; died, 1935.

William Scoresby Routledge was born in 1859; married Katherine Maria Pease, 1906; died, 1939.

The Routledges went to live among the Kikuyu people of British East Africa (now Kenya) and jointly published With A Prehistoric People (1910); they organised an expedition to Easter Island, 1910, affiliated with the British Association for the Advancement of Science, the British Museum and the Royal Geographical Society; the expedition, on the schooner MANA, departed, 1913 and arrived 1914; they left Easter Island, 1915.

Papers of William and Katherine Routledge from their expedition to Easter Island, 1913-1916 together with some papers concerning Jamaica, including notebooks, papers, sketches, maps, photographs, slides and correspondence; extensive notes of writings of earlier visitors to the island; log books of the expedition yacht MANA, 20 Feb 1913-31 Jul 1916; burgee of the MANA; lists of yacht's stores, expenses etc.; draft of Katherine Routledge's book, The Mystery of Easter Island; tracings of rock carvings, sketch plans, lantern slides, photographs, correspondence and notes from Easter Island; albums of press cuttings, chiefly reviews of The Mystery of Easter Island and With a Prehistoric People; index cards with a vocabulary of Mangarevanotes and correspondence concerning Jamaica and the expedition to cross the John Crow Mountains, 1920-1933.

The albums of press cuttings and the index cards were presented to the RGS by James R Stewart, 1961. The remainder of the collection was left in the RGS by William Routledge, 1929.
