Administrative/Biographical history:

John Heaviside was a medical student and later lectured at Surgeon's Hall.

John Hunter (1728-1793) and his brother William ran a School of Anatomy in Great Windmill Street, opened by William in 1768. John practised as surgeon in Golden Square from 1763 and was Surgeon to St George's Hospital from 1768. He began to lecture on the principles and practice of surgery in 1773. His publications included A treatise on the venereal disease (London, 1786) and A treatise on the blood, inflammation, and gunshot wounds (London, 1794).

Papers of John Heaviside, c1792, comprising transcript of lecture by John Hunter on fractured patella, gunshot wounds, cancer, scrophula, locked jaw, mortification or partial death, undated; notes from poisons by John Hunter, c1790; notes on lecture by John Hunter on venereal disease;

notes on an introductory lecture to a course of 58 lectures on surgery; notes on a lecture on inflammation; notes on opium; accounts of cases and post-mortem examinations, 1792.

In the main, the provenance of these collections is not known. Some were possibly purchased from the sale of John Heaviside's museum in 1829.
