The Royal Anthropological Institute, which dates from 1843, has gathered various papers and collections over time; unpublished papers, not directly part of the Institute's own history, form the Manuscript Collection; for papers relating to the history and activities of the Institute see the 'Archives' collection.

Content

Scope and content/abstract:

The manuscript series, 1760-2001, includes field notes, research notes, vocabularies, transcripts of lectures, essays, cards, drawings, diagrams and photographs of anthropologists. Collections range from single volumes to many boxes and are assigned a numerical running number

Largely English, with a few items in other European languages; vocabularies include a variety of languages, including some from Africa and Australia.

System of arrangement:

The manuscript items are assigned a number which has no significance; some collections of material cover several numbers.

Conditions governing access:

Appointments are necessary for all visits; please contact the archivist by email to arrange; a fee of £10 is payable by all visitors except Fellows and Members; membership details can be found on the RAI web site; access to material referring to the most recent thirty years is restricted; some material is very fragile and may not be available for view; a few items are of restricted or forbidden access.

Conditions governing reproduction:

Photocopies and scans may be arranged at the discretion of the archivist; charges apply; in all cases forms governing use of copies must be signed; use of digital cameras is not allowed.

There is a brief hand-list for the collection; work is on-going to produce detailed catalogues; some of these are available and may be requested from the archivist; there is also a general index.
