Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

John Wood was born in Bradford in 1793. He was apprenticed to a worsted manufacturer at the age of 15. A few years later he became a master spinner in his own right; his factory came to be considered exemplary in its treatment of both adult and child workers. Wood became an exponent of (and reluctant agitator for) factory reform during the 1820s, but he broke with the reform movement in the late 1830s, feeling it was too militant. He retired from business early, and died in 1871.

Letter from John Wood to Richard Oastler via the Post Office, Leeds, Yorkshire [redirected from Foxley Hall, Huddersfield], Nov 1830. 'I send you this as proof of the general disposition to meet the question. The signatures annexed include almost every Bradford Spinner ...'. Autograph, with signature. Written on the dorse of a poster advertising a meeting of Bradford worsted spinners on 22 Nov 1830, with the aim of improving working conditions; the poster is folded in half, with the direction and postmarks on one leaf and the content of the letter on the other.
