Administrative/Biographical history:
The American College of Surgeons was initiated in 1913 by Chicago Surgeon, Franklin Martin, following a series of successful clinical congresses attended by American surgeons in 1911 (Philedelphia) and 1912 (New York). The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that aims to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice.

Papers of the American College of Surgeons, 1947-1955, comprising 2 volumes containing a list of Fellows of the American College of Surgeons who subscribed to a fund for the Royal College of Surgeons of England, to replace buildings damaged during World War Two, 1947; and a formal letter of condolence on the death of Sir Arthur Keith, 1955.

Immediate source of acquisition:
One volume was donated by Mrs J H Smith, the niece of Sir Arthur Keith, in 1955. The other volume was transferred from the College office in 1956.
