Edward Jenner was born, Berkeley, Gloucestershire, 1749; educated at private schools at Wootton-under-Edge and Cirencester; apprenticed to Daniel Ludlow of Sodbury, a surgeon; pupil-resident in the house of John Hunter, 1770-1772; employed by Sir Joseph Banks to prepare specimens from Captain Cook's voyage; studied at St George's Hospital; practiced at Berkeley, 1773; continued to correspond with John Hunter on many subjects; member of medical societies at Rodborough and Alveston, reading papers on medical subjects and natural history; Fellow, Royal Society, 1788; MD, University of St Andrew's, 1792; continued his investigations into cow pox and small pox; vaccinated a boy James Phipps with cow pox and then small pox, who contracted cow pox but not small pox, 1796; published An inquiry into the causes and effects of the variolæ vaccinæ, a disease discovered in some of the Western Counties of England ... known by the name of the cow pox, 1798; sent cow pox material throughout England and abroad for vaccinations; vaccinated nearly 200 people at Petworth, Sussex, 1800; granted £10,000 by Parliament in recognition of his work, 1802; Royal Jennerian Society established to promote spread of vaccination in London, 1802; replaced by the National Vaccine Establishment, 1808; continued to work and publish on vaccination; died, 1823, Berkeley, Gloucestershire.

Scope and content/abstract:

The collection comprises correspondence, writings and administrative material relating to the Jenner family, particularly Dr. Edward Jenner (pioneer of smallpox vaccination) and the associated Black and Davies families, 1680-1877.

The material on Edward Jenner includes papers relating to organisations set up in the aftermath of his vaccination discoveries: the National Vaccine Establishment, the Royal Jennerian Society and the London Vaccine Institution.

The collection is arranged as follows: MSS.1180-1218, 1233 and 5226 relate to the Reverend George Charles Black and his wife Mary (née Jenner), sister of Edward Jenner. MSS.2048-2051 and 5229 relate to the Rev. William Davies (1741-1817), Edward Jenner's brother-in-law, and Anne Davies née Jenner (1741-1812). MSS.2052-2069 and 5230 relate to the Rev. William Davies (1769-1849), son of William Davies (1741-1817). MSS.2802-2819 relate to the Rev. Henry Head (1664-1739), grandfather of Dr. Edward Jenner. MSS.3014-3028, 3662-3663, 4220, 4257, 4302-4306, 5231-5242, 5244-5248 and, 7966 relate to Dr. Edward Jenner (1749-1823). Within this group of papers, MSS.3662-3663 relate to the National Vaccine Establishment, MSS.4257, 4302-4306 and 5246 to the Royal Jennerian Society, MSS.5244-5245 to Charles Murray and his work for the Royal Jennerian Society and the National Vaccine Establishment, and MSS.5247-5248 to the London Vaccine Institution. MSS.3029 relates to Elizabeth Jenner, whose relationship with other family members is unclear. MSS.3030, 3071-3072, 5222-5223, 5243 and 5249 comprise general Jenner family material. MS.3031 relates to Stephen Jenner (1645-1727) . MSS.3032-3038 and 5224 relate to the Reverend Stephen Jenner (1702-1754), the father of Dr. Edward Jenner. MSS.3039-3067 and 5225 relate to the Reverend Stephen Jenner (1732-1797), brother of Dr. Edward Jenner. MSS.3068-3070 relate to the Reverend Thomas Jenner. MSS.3587-3588 relate to Frederick Mockler's assembling of much of this Jenner material, comprising catalogue information. MSS.4487-4489 comprise Seely family material; Elizabeth Seely, an aunt of Dr. Edward Jenner, having married the Rev. Robert Seely of Berkshire. MS.5227 relates to the Reverend Henry Jenner (1737-1798) and Henry Jenner M.D. (1767-1851), respectively brother and nephew of Dr. Edward Jenner. MS.5228 relates to the Reverend George Charles Jenner, son of the Reverend Henry Jenner.

The majority of this material, formerly part of the Mockler Collection, was purchased at Sotheby's, London, in November 1918 (acc.43215). Acquisition details for specific items are given on the record for that item.
