Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

John Whitsed studied at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals in London, and became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1805. He sold his practice in Peterborough to Dr Thomas Walker in 1819, and went to Edinburgh to study his doctor of medicine, graduating in 1823. He became a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in 1830. For a number of years Dr Whitsed was a Senior and Consulting Physician at the General Dispensary, London. He was also President of the Cambridge and Huntingdon Branch of the British Medical Association. He was the author of a work on Diseases resembling Syphilis, published in 1813, and a contributer to Remarkable Case of Foetal Monstrosity.

Papers of John Whitsed, early 19th century, comprising a transcript of notes by Whitsed of John Hunter's lectures on Surgery, originally taken by Mr Hopkinson in the early 1780s; letter from William Clift to Dr Whitsed, 6 Sep 1785, regarding the loan of the volume to him; a cutting from The Englishman magazine regarding the manuscripts of John Hunter; a letter from the donor Thomas James Walker MRCS; and a reply of thanks from the College.

Archival history:

The volume containing the original notes made by Dr Hopkinson was loaned to William Clift by Dr Whitsed from 1827-1835. Clift had a copy made of the manuscript (see MS0007/1/7/5/2), and returned the volume to Dr Whitsed, as is evidenced by the letter from Clift at the front of the Whitsed transcription. Dr Whitsed made a transcription of the original volume, which was given to Thomas James Walker by Dr Whitsed's daughter after his death. This volume is the transcription, indicated by the first paragraph of the index at the back of volume, which is initalled J W, and explains the presence of the letter from William Clift at the beginning of the volume.

Donated by Thomas James Walker (MRCS) on the occasion of his 50th anniversary of membership in 1907.
