Following a cyber attack in October 2023, the British Library is launching a new system to request collection items. This means that, for the first time in nearly a year, users will once again be able to request items online before visiting the library. You can request items remotely from Monday the 30th of September 2024, via the British Library’s interim catalogue. Search for the item you need, then follow the prompts to complete your online request. You can request items up to 28 days in advance, from wherever you are.
To request collection items, users will require a Reader Pass which has been issued or renewed since the 21st of March 2024. If you don’t need to consult collection items, you don’t need to renew your Reader Pass right away—you can continue using your existing in-date pass to enter the Reading Rooms.
If you need to renew your Reader Pass, bring ID to Reader Registration in London or Yorkshire. You can check what ID is suitable, and see FAQs, here. Should you need help or have a question about renewing your pass, you can email the British Library at: itemrequests@bl.uk.
