CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

In March 1965, at the requests of the Governments of Argentina and Chile, the British Government established a Boundary Court to determine the border between the two countries in a disputed area between Boundary Posts 16 and 17. L P Kirwan, the Secretary and Director of the RGS, was a member of the court and of the field mission. The court made its award on 24 November 1966.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract:

Miscellaneous papers, largely photocopies relating to the Award of the Argentine-Chile Boundary Court of Arbitration, 1966: these include drafts of the report, submissions and other material from the two parties, photographs and maps of the disputed area. The sixth folder contains Sir L Kirwan's personal impressions of the field mission.

More material relating to the arbitration was bequeathed to the Society, along with other papers, after L. P. Kirwan's death in 1999, this awaits accessioning.
