CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

Awarded the Founder's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) in 1870 for his journey in Eastern Turkistan. On a second expedition to Gilgit and Yassin financed by the RGS he was murdered at Gilgit, 1870.

Scope and content/abstract:

Fifteen watercolours of Turkistan (Ladakh, Kashgar and Yarkand) by George Hayward some with descriptive text on backs; two sketch plans of Kashgar and Yarkand forts and photograph of the grave of Hayward.
