CONTEXT
Administrative/Biographical history:
The Reverend Wernham was one time parish priest at Christ Church, Forest Hill, in which parish there was also a German church. The latter's pastor, for a short time before the war, had been Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Reverend Wernham has been associated with Bishop George Bell of Chichester, who helped rescue a number of German clergy of Jewish extraction.

Scope and content/abstract:
Correspondence of the Reverend Wernham, 1937-1940, containing letters documenting his assistance to German Jewish refugees just before and after the outbreak of World War Two. Also included is material documenting German attitudes to the political situation immediately prior to the outbreak of war.
