CONTEXT
Administrative/Biographical history:
The County Council was required to take vigorous measures to deal with various diseases of animals, including swine fever, foot and mouth disease and fowl pest. Order made by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, enforced by the Council, aimed at controlling the movement of animals during epidemics and preventing disease. Control of movement was achieved by a system of licensing and for this purpose qualified veterinary surgeons were employed as inspectors.
The Council was also responsible for enforcing the Fertilizers and Feeding Stuffs Act, 1926, which dealt with the sale and purchase of solid and liquid fertilizers and of feeding-stuffs for horses, cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. It was required that the seller must supply the analysis of the main constituents on every sale of these materials. Sellers' premises were visited by inspectors to ensure that information of the type required was being given, and samples were taken and checked by the County agricultural analyst.

Records of the Middlesex County Council Clerk's Department relating to the control of diseases of animals, 1909-1965, including general administrative files relating to veterinary inspectors fees and conditions of service and the appointment of an agricultural analyst; papers relating to diseases of animals including list of livestock owners in Middlesex, handbooks and orders relating to the care of animals.
Papers relating to specific diseases including anthrax, bovine mastitis, atropic rhinitis, cattle plague, epizootic lymphangitis, foot and mouth disease, fowl pest, glanders and farcy, parasitic mange, Johne's disease, pneumonia, rabies, sheep scab, scrapie, swine fever, tuberculosis and warble fly; papers relating to the movement of animals including importation and exportation orders, landing prohibition orders, control of dogs, registers of swine and foot and mouth disease licences and markets and sales orders.
Papers relating to fertilisers and feeding stuffs, including inspections under the Fertilizers and Feeding Stuffs Act 1926, high protein poultry food, infringements and prosecutions; papers relating to pests including watermark disease, wart disease and fruit tree pests; and papers relating to the breeding of horses.
