CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

A Carman was a man a carter or carrier. In 1514 the Fraternity of St Katherine the Virgin and Martyr was formed giving the Carmen a monopoly of plying for hire in the City. They became an independent fellowship in 1668 by an act of Common Council and in 1946 received their charter from George VI. The Carmen were originally carriers of goods, but are now concerned with all aspects of the transport industry. The Company maintains a special relationship with the Royal Corps of Transport.

Scope and content/abstract:

Records of the Worshipful Company of Carmen, 1665-1972. Records include registers of freedom admissions; Court minute books; financial accounts; lists of proprietors and operators of carrooms; registers and lists of apprentice bindings and letter books.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING ACCESS: These records are stored at the Guildhall Library site rather than the LMA Clerkenwell site. Researchers wishing to access these records should do so at the Guildhall Library Rare Books table. The Library is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 16:45. Researchers will need to have an Archives History Card or a Library Readers Card. An archivist will be available at Guildhall Library on Thursday mornings to answer any queries.

The records of the Worshipful Company of Carmen of London were deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library in 1948 and in February 1997. The Manuscripts Section merged with London Metropolitan Archives in 2008. The records have been catalogued by various members of staff over many years.
