The Stepney Jewish Primary School was founded in 1863 by the Adler family (Nathan Adler and his son Hermann Adler both held the post of Chief Rabbi). Ilford became a major Jewish centre and the Stepney School moved to the area in the late 1960s, changing its name at the same time.
