History of the united parishes of Christchurch Newgate Street and Saint Leonard Foster Lane, and the former parish of Saint Nicholas Shambles:
The church of Saint Nicholas Shambles was built some time before 1196. It was demolished in 1547 and the parish dissolved. The parish of Christchurch Newgate Street (also known as Christchurch Greyfriars) was formed in the same year to replace the parish of Saint Nicholas Shambles and also that of Saint Ewin. Very little is known about the parish of Saint Ewin, and no records are known to have survived.
The church of the former monastery of the Friars Minor, or Grey Friars, became the parish church of the new parish of Christchurch Newgate Street. The first church built on the site in 1225 was for the Friars, but it was rebuilt by 1348. In turn this was destroyed by the Great Fire and was rebuilt by Wren in 1687-1704. Apart from the steeple this church was destroyed in the Blitz. The steeple tower and vestry have been restored and the rest of the site turned into a garden. The church of Saint Leonard Foster Lane was destroyed in the Great Fire and not rebuilt and in 1670 the parish was united to Christchurch Newgate Street.

Records of the parish of Christ Church, Newgate Street, City of London, including some records for Saint Nicholas Shambles (1538-1547 only). Records include parish registers from 1547-88 and then from 1724 (baptisms, banns, marriages); Vestry minutes from 1869; Churchwardens' accounts from 1891; church rate and tithe rate assessments books; and poor rate assessment books.

Archival history:
Many records were destroyed in the Great Fire (1666) or the Blitz (1940-41), and of those that survive many are damaged.
Immediate source of acquisition:
The records of the united parishes have been deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library at various dates since 1900. The most recent deposits for each parish are as follows: Christchurch Newgate Street, 2006; St. Leonard Foster Lane, 1960. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.

In 1891, administration of the charitable gifts and bequests of the parish of Christchurch Newgate Street was transferred to the City Parochial Foundation. Deeds relating to these gifts and bequests, 1600-1851, have been deposited amongst the records of the City Parochial Foundation.
Churchwardens' accounts of Christchurch Newgate Street 1546-8 are held by St. Bartholomew's Hospital Archives and Museum, West Smithfield, London EC1A 7BE and are available by appointment only.
