Administrative/Biographical history:

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is the trade body for insurance companies in the UK. It was formed in 1985 on the merger of the British Insurance Association, the Life Offices' Association, the Fire Offices Committee and the Accident Offices Association. The Association has around 400 companies in membership. The work of the ABI includes policy formulation, research and statistics, and public relations representing the insurance industry. It also organises conferences and seminars and publishes reports. The ABI is based at 51 Gresham Street in the City of London.

Material is arranged in 32 subfonds according to individual company (as listed in the Scope and Content field). Within each subfond records are arranged by MS number, assigned during cataloguing at the Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section.

These records are available for public inspection, although records containing personal information are subject to access restrictions under the UK Data Protection Act, 1998. Records are available only with 48 hours notice, with the exception of CLC/B/017/MS29151A/001-003 which are films and available by prior appointment only.

Copyright to this collection rests with the City of London except items dating from 1985 where copyright rests with the depositor.

Immediate source of acquisition:

Records deposited in the Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section by the Association of British Insurers at various dates. The Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009. Further records were gifted in 2011; records of ABI dating after 1985 were deposited on long term loan in 2011.
