CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

Peter du Cane, cloth merchant and businessman, purchased Braxted Park (near Witham in Essex) in 1751. The family estates were inherited by his son Peter in 1803; Peter's son Peter in 1823 and Peter's cousin Captain Charles du Cane, RN, in 1889. The family sold the estate in 1919.
