CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

Thomas Bowrey, sea captain and free merchant, was probably of a Wapping family and born c 1650. Between 1669-1688 he travelled and traded extensively in the East Indies. He returned to London in 1688 and, in 1691, married his cousin, Mary Gardiner (d 1715), the daughter of a Wapping apothecary. In 1691 he became a younger brother of Trinity House. He and his wife lived the rest of their life in Wellclose Square, Wapping. He published the first dictionary of English and Malay in 1701. He died in 1713.

Papers of Thomas Bowrey, sea captain and merchant, including ledger; correspondence; diaries; drawings; charts; and maps; relating to travel and trade in India, Africa, Holland, France, Batavia (Jakarta) and Persia (Iran); the "Coffree" language of Delagoa and the Telenga language; shipping insurance and Lloyd's coffee house; whaling; and piracy.

Business and personal papers were presented to Guildhall Library by Colonel Henry Howard in 1931. These are catalogued as Ms 3041. Further papers were deposited by the library of Lloyd's of London in 1988. These are catalogued as Mss 24176-24178. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
