Administrative/Biographical history:

Colonel (Robert) Thomas de Veil (d 1746) was the founder of the Bow Street court house in 1740. Notorious for the severity of his sentencing and his aversion to the consumption of alcohol, he was portrayed by William Hogarth in the 'Night' section of Four times of the day.

Copy of the will of Robert Thomas de Veil, 22 May 1747, addressed to Catherine, wife of Philip De La Port. Includes applied seal.

305 x 185 mm. paper bifolium. With an applied seal, in black wax, round, 30 mm, with the legend 'Virtus interrita pergit'.
