CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

William Allen Daley held public health offices from the beginning of his career and was the Chief Medical Officer of Health for London County Council from 1939 until his retirement in February 1952, after which he was an Associate Member of the Baltimore Public Health Dept for 4 months.

After returning to Britain, Daley continued to serve on a variety of committees, relating to community health and ancillary professions, as well as other health and medical matters. He was involved in several special studies or projects, either as part of the particular committee or because he was invited to by the organisation. Very often a report was produced as a result of the work or study undertaken by Daley; in most cases, these reports can be found among these papers.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract:

Papers of Allen Daley, mainly from the period after Daley's retirement in 1952 until his death in 1969. They comprise correspondence, committee papers, reports, lecture notes and photographs relating to many aspects of public health and community medicine, including other professions in the public health field and health education. Of particular note is the almost complete set of his lecture notes, articles and speeches spanning his career and retirement (see C.3), many of which include other information relating to public health gathered by Daley for the purposes of writing the speech or article. Also, after his retirement he reviewed nearly 600 book and journal articles (see C.7).

Some areas of the collection had been kept in order, and required little sorting: for example, his correspondence has been catalogued in virtually the way Daley kept it. Other areas required sorting to establish an order that would make the collection more accessible for readers. In most cases, sets of papers which came to Daley as a part of a committee are incomplete. Daley used papers sent to him as scrap paper and to make his own notes, as the reverse of many items are papers which he had been sent at one time. All the minutes are copies. Most sections of correspondence contain a copy of Daley's out-letters. The papers have been weeded of duplicate items and ephemeral material not worthy of historical preservation.

Conditions governing access:

The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking.

Please note that material may be unsuitable for copying on conservation grounds, and that photographs cannot be photocopied in any circumstances.
