CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

The papers in this collection relate to a four year project funded by the DHSS to set up an Occupational Medicine Department in Bedford Hospital, for the staff: the first such department in this country, initiated in 1967. They include reports to the DHSS and minutes of the committee administering the department. There are also the minutes of a committee set up under the auspices of the Westminster Group to set up an Occupational Health Department, and the tapes and slides used in a tape-slide presentation on occupational health in hospitals.

Minutes and reports of Bedford Hospital Staff Occupational Health Department, 1960s-1970s, with reports to DHSS, tape-slide presentation, minutes and papers relating to setting up of Staff Occupational Health Department for Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster Health Authority, 1975-1977.

These papers were given to the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre (now the Wellcome Library Archives and Manucsripts Department) in May 1992 by Dr Harte on his retirement.

His library of occupational health publications is now in the Library of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine; papers on research into sickness absence over five years among Bedford Hospital staff are in the Bedfordsire Record Office; several hundred slides relating to occupational health problems are now with Professor Harrington at Birmingham University Occupational Health Department.
