Administrative/Biographical history:

From 1813 Faraday was Chemistry Assistant at the Laboratory of the Royal Institution, first to Sir Humphrey Davy [1778-1829], and then to William Thomas Brande [1788-1866], for whose lectures these extensive notes were compiled.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract:

Annotated copy of Thomas Brande's 'Manuel of Chemistry'. London. 1819, with copious MS. holograph additions and notes, etc by Michael Faraday: extra-illustrated with engraved plates of the Royal Institution Laboratory, etc. These notes are mostly references and quotations from earlier writers on chemistry and from scientific journals. Many of the longer entries are initialed 'M. F.', and the latest date is 1835. Produced in London.

1 vol. in 3. pp. xlvii + 652 + 2 ll. illus. 8vo. and 4to. 221/2 x 14 cm. 261/2 x 21 cm. Original half-Russia calf binding, badly worn, back-strips wanting. Brande's work has been cut up, and rebound into 3 inter-leaved 4to. volumes: Faraday's notes are written on the inter-leaves.
