CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

The Ebers Papyrus was named after its owner, Georg Moritz Ebers (1837-1898) and comprises an ancient Egyptian text on medicine. A translation from ancient Egyptian into German was published by Dr. Heinrich Joachim in 1890. These papers comprise a translation of Joachim's work into English by Dr. Arthur F. Hopkirk.

MSS.2272-2277 comprise Hopkirk's manuscript translation of Joachim's text; a bibliography, contents, index and notes are inserted into MS.2277. MSS.2278-2279 are a typescript copy of Hopkirk's translation.

The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking.

The material described here is an unpublished translation into English of Papyros Ebers: das älteste Buch über Heilkunde by Heinrich Joachim (Berlin: Georg Reimer, 1890). Another English translation of Joachim's text was published in 1930 by C.P. Bryan: The Papyrus Ebers / translated from the German version by Cyril P. Bryan ... with an introduction by Professor J. Elliot Smith (London : G. Bles, [1930]).
