CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

Brenda Morrison, MB, BS, MD, trained at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), Newcastle-upon-Tyne, during the late 1930s, and her first house surgeon's job was in the Orthopaedic Department just after the outbreak of World War Two in 1939. She subsequently became the first Paediatric Registrar at the RVI. In 1949 she moved to Hammersmith Hospital. She later trained as a psychoanalyst.

Scope and content/abstract:

Memoir of Brenda Morrison and other papers including memoir entitled ''Reminiscences of a woman doctor, 1933-1956', in which she describes developments in paediatrics during that period and also various other contemporary medical developments such as blood transfusion, plastic surgery, antibiotics and chemotherapy; C.V. 1998; reprints of publications by Dr Morrison, 1945-1957 (incomplete set) and memoir of her later life 'Training and Practice in Psychoanalysis 1956-1996' .

This memoir and associated material were received by the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre (now Archives and Manuscripts, Wellcome Library) as a gift from Dr Morrison (Mrs Knight) in June 1998; a second installment of the memoir covering her later career in psychoanalysis was received in June 2007.
