CONTEXT
Administrative/Biographical history:
The Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Secretary and Librarian undertook the administration of the Institute under the direction of the Committee of Management and was also responsible for building up the library. The position was held by K Howard Drake from 1947 until his death in 1967. He was succeeded by W A F P Steiner. In 1971 the functions were separated, with Steiner continuing as IALS Librarian while administrative duties passed to a new Secretary, J A Boxhall.

Correspondence and papers of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (IALS) Secretary/Librarian, 1946-1984, primarily comprise a selection of the general and administrative files of K Howard Drake, with a small amount of correspondence of W A F P Steiner and J A Boxhall. Appraisal, destruction and scheduling information:
Files 1-9 comprise what was left following a weeding exercise in 1974 by J A Boxhall; they were placed in four box files entitled "Current files - earlier correspondence: weeded JB 1974". During appraisal of the IALS archives in 1999 by the Archivist, some further files with similar markings, which were clearly correspondence and papers of K Howard Drake as Librarian, were found loose in a variety of locations and added to the series. Later files were added, as they were identified, chronologically.
