Administrative/Biographical history:
Josef Beran (1888-1969) was Archbishop of Prague and was later made a Cardinal. Beran was put under house arrest by the new Communist government in 1949. He was released in 1963 and in 1965 was allowed to leave Czechoslovakia for the Vatican City.

Scope and content/abstract:
Copy of letter from Joesph Beran, Archbishop of Prague to Dr Alexej Cepicka, Minister of Mustice in the Czechoslovak Government, 6 July 1948. It demonstrates the strength of the church's opposition to the Communist system.
