CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history:

Sir Charles Blicke was born in 1745. He trained at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and was elected assistant surgeon in 1779. John Abernethy became his apprentice in 1779. Blicke became surgeon in 1787. He was a member of the Court of Assistants at Surgeon's Hall and in 1803 was knighted and became Master of the Royal College of Surgeons in London. The Court of Assistants gave their thanks to him in 1811, for his work as Treasurer during the building of the College. He died in London, in 1815.

William Sharpe was a former member of Court but no further biographical information was available at the time of compilation.

Papers relating to Sir Charles Blicke and William Sharpe, 1808-1816, comprising a volume containing a detailed manuscript list of the books presented to the College Library by Blicke, 4 Jan 1808-1816; and a volume containing a detailed manuscript list of the books presented to the College Library by Sharpe, 2 Jul 1810.

These were the 2 founding donations given to the College when the Board of Curators began seriously collecting in 1807.

Immediate source of acquisition:

Sir Charles Blicke gave 130 volumes while he was alive and left more in his will, as well as £300 to be invested for buying books in perpetuity.

William Sharpe's books were donated by his widow. The library owes many of its 17th-century medical books to Sharpe, and to Sir Anthony Carlisle.
