Administrative/Biographical history:

Dr Margaret Lowenfeld was a paediatrician who became a pioneer of child psychology and psychotherapy. Her outstanding contributions sprang from her recognition that play is an important activity in children's development. She invented non-verbal techniques that enabled children to express themselves, including The Lowenfeld World Technique and Lowenfeld Mosaics. The former involved the use of sand trays and miniature toys. The child guidance clinic Lowenfeld established in the late 1920s in London's Notting Hill developed into the Institute for Child Psychology.

Boxes 1-15 contain material catalogued by the Centre for Family Research, the detailed listing of which is given on the Wellcome Library catalogue and also on the Dr Margaret Lowenfeld Trust website,

Boxes 16-23 contain uncatalogued material that cannot currently be made accessible; the majority of this material comprises patient case notes and will thus be closed under the Data Protection Act for some years even when catalogued.

The papers are available subject to the usual conditions of access to Archives and Manuscripts material, after the completion of a Reader's Undertaking. The majority is open to the general reader but sensitive material relating to persons who may still be alive will be closed or restricted under the Data Protection Act:

Conditions governing reproduction:

Photocopies/photographs/microfilm are supplied for private research only at the Archivist's discretion. Please note that material may be unsuitable for copying on conservation grounds, and that photographs cannot be photocopied in any circumstances. Readers are restricted to 100 photocopies in twelve months. Researchers who wish to publish material must seek copyright permission from the copyright owner.

Archival history:

Lowenfeld material was arranged by Ville Andersen, Margaret Lowenfeld's colleague in research and clinical work from the 1950s until Margaret Lowenfeld's death. When Ville Andersen herself died in 1986, further material was made available. Friends and colleagues of the late Kate MacSorley, clinical psychologist at the Institute of Child Psychology from the mid nineteen sixties, placed photographs, clinical records and research material with the archive.
