BA (1841); Career: Articled to an architect and surveyor; took up teaching; assistant to George Fownes (FRS 1845); Professor of Practical Chemistry, University College, London (1849-1857); had a speech impediment; Editor, Journal of the Chemical Society (1849-1884); Fellow of the Royal Society, 1866; died, 1884.
