Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

Kenneth A Gourlay (c 1920-1995) was a British ethnomusicologist who conducted work amongst the Karamojong of Uganda, in Nigeria and in Papua New Guinea. Gourlay went to Uganda in the 1960s to teach English at Makarere University and was by 1984 Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Musicology Section of the Centre for Nigerian Cultural Studies at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria.

Scope and content/abstract:

The archive includes field recordings, papers, drafts of articles, notebooks and a set of index cards from Kenneth A Gourlay's ethnomusicological research on the musical cultures of the Karamojong of Uganda, in Nigeria and in Papua New Guinea.

Arranged as at deposit. Folders are numbered, presumably by Gourlay using his own numbering system and appear to be broadly arranged according to ethnographic group. Tapes are also labelled with a numbering system.
