Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

The first known reference to the Company is in 1284 although the earliest surviving ordinances date from 1391. Horners worked in horn making horn spoons, combs and so on. In 1476 the Bottlemakers (makers of leather bottles) joined with the Horners since both crafts were troubled by increasing competition from glassware. A note in the Company's ordinance book, Ms 6508, suggests the link was as early as 1368.

Scope and content/abstract:

Records of the Worshipful Company of Horners, 1373-1997. The records include registers of freedom admissions from 1847 and of apprentice bindings from 1694. Other records include ordinance books; Court minute books; financial accounts; legal documents including covenants; legal case papers and correspondence. NO ACCESS TO MS 30509 WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION FROM THE CLERK.

Researchers wishing to access these records should do so at the Guildhall Library Rare Books table. The Library is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 16:45. Researchers will need to have an Archives History Card or a Library Readers Card. An archivist will be available at Guildhall Library on Thursday mornings to answer any queries.

The records have been catalogued by various members of staff over many years. To assist the user, the catalogue has been arranged in sections each with an archival classification code as follows: A: Constitutional records, B: Court records, C: Membership records; D: Financial records, E: Trade records, F: Clerk's records, G: Charities and estates.

The Company's archives were deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library in 1949, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2005. The Manuscripts Section merged with London Metropolitan Archives in 2008.
