Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

The parish church of Saint Mary Aldermanbury was rebuilt by Wren after the Great Fire in 1666. It was damaged by enemy action during the Second World War, but was not rebuilt. The ruins of the church were shipped to Fulton, Missouri, United States as a memorial to Sir Winston Churchill. In 1954, the united parishes of Saint Alphage London Wall and Saint Mary Aldermanbury were united to the parish of Saint Giles Cripplegate.

Records of Saint Mary Aldermanbury, City of London, including parish registers (baptisms, marriages, burials and banns) from 1538; Churchwardens' accounts and vestry minutes from in 1569 and other records dating chiefly from the 18th century, including poor rate books and papers relating to poor relief.

The records of the parishes of St. Mary Aldermanbury and St. Alphage London Wall have been deposited in the Manuscripts Section of Guildhall Library at various dates since 1905. The most recent deposits for each parish were in 1987. The Guildhall Library Manuscripts Section merged with the London Metropolitan Archives in 2009.
