Context

Administrative/Biographical history:

The City Imperial Volunteers (as they are usually known) or C.I.V. were raised by the Lord Mayor in December 1899 to fight in the Boer War in South Africa. Donations were received from City Livery Companies, bankers and City and West End firms.

Recruits, who were aged between 20 and 30, enlisted for one year. They were all granted the Freedom of the City of London and embarked for South Africa on 13, 20 and 29 January 1900 with another draft in July 1900. They returned home in October 1900 and were disbanded.

Archival Information

Archival history:

Immediate source of acquisition:

The records held are almost all (Mss 10190-208) of the regimental depot at Guildhall. They were probably amongst those records deposited in Guildhall by the C.I.V. in 1901, which are listed in Ms 12208. Few seem to have survived. They may have been stored in the same room as the regimental mementoes which were lost in the air raid of 29 December 1940. They were catalogued by Guildhall Library staff in 1959. The other records of the C.I.V. held here (Mss 30650-1) were deposited by the Inns of Court and City Yeomanry who provided mounted infantry recruits for the C.I.V. They were catalogued by Guildhall Library staff in 1996.
